A woman’s wedding day is one of the most special moments in her life and we all want to look our best. Bridal bootcamps are booming thanks to brides’ determination to lose weight for their big day – but I’m here to tell you that looking your radiant best doesn’t have to involve punishing workouts or extreme diets.
Think back to when your fiancé proposed. Who did he propose to? You – or a version of you that’s twenty pounds lighter? He loves you for exactly who you are right now! Why put so much effort into changing who he loves? He didn’t just ask you to marry him out of pity – he wants to spend the rest of his life with you because he thinks you’re the hottest woman on the planet right now – so start acting like it!
- Start with your skin.
Preparations for our wedding day should be fun and nurturing to our body and soul. It is possible
to be kind to yourself and look beautiful and radiant as you say your vows – and it all starts with taking care of your skin. Simple changes to our diets and a little commitment to eating the right things will have our skin perfectly glowing in just a few weeks.
To start with, ditch the idea of crash dieting. Quickly losing – and then regaining – weight causes skin to sag and wrinkle, as well as producing stretch marks. Instead nourish your skin with foods rich in Vitamins E and C. Vitamin E protects skin from cell damage as well as promoting healthy growth. Find it in almonds, hazelnuts and avocados. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant and also helps to produce the collagen that keeps skin looking young and lifted – berries, oranges and broccoli are all great sources.
One of my favourite ways of getting both these vitamins in one hit is to make a chocolate mousse – I did say you don’t have to punish yourself to look your best! I take two ripe, mashed avocados and blend in a processor with the zest and juice of an orange, three tablespoons of quality cocoa powder and a tablespoon of honey. When everything’s blended put into pots, chill for a couple of hours and then serve with extra orange segments or a handful of berries. There’s never been a more indulgent way to get great skin – and as dark chocolate’s high in antioxidants this is one treat that really is guilt-free!
As well as eating right, your skin will thank you for drinking lots of H2O as well. Drink 6 to 8 large glasses or water per day and try to steer clear of too much caffeine and alcohol, both of which will dehydrate your skin. Green tea is a great alternative, with anti-inflammatory catechins that prevent cell damage and inflammation.
- Get active.
If hard core workouts are your thing then great – keep going – but don’t worry if they’re not. Anything that gets you moving is great for your complexion and overall fitness. Maybe you want to work on your first dance with your fiancé, or just schedule in some time to walk to meetings with your wedding planner. Gadgets like Fitbits are brilliant at motivating you to move more – you’ll be surprised how it all adds up.
Something that every bride should focus on is posture. A great posture makes us feel more confident and has us looking slimmer with no extreme measures needed. Yoga and Pilates are both great to help elongate our frame and have us holding ourselves with elegance. If you can’t get to a class try some of the great online instructors on YouTube or get hold of a DVD. I’m addicted to Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga Total Body Workout!
- Know your body.
That’s the body you have right now – enough of waiting until you’re ten pounds lighter or you’ve got that boob job you dream of! Take a look at your body shape. Are you a pear, with hips wider than your shoulders, or an apple, with narrow hips, broad shoulders and weight that always goes straight to your middle? However much we want to, we can’t change our body shape – it’s ours and we need to start loving ourselves for who we are!
Understanding our body type is essential if we’re to look our best for our wedding day. Dress for the body you’ve got and you can be confident that you’ll look and feel incredible. Pear shapes looking stunning in an A line gown and if you’re shoulders are broader than your hips then balance your frame with a fairy tale ball gown. Have fun playing around with different styles and you’ll find the one that shows off your amazing body to perfection!
Unless you’re a beauty professional, hiring a makeup artist and hair stylist for your big day is a
must – believe me, when you see your photographs you’ll realize its money well spent. Find someone who specializes in brides and make sure you meet her for a consultation at least once so that you can find the perfect look to compliment your own unique beauty.
It’s also worth visiting a facialist for a few appointments before your nuptials. Bridal facials will repay all the work you’ve put into your skin and get it super glowing in time for your vows. It’s also important to schedule some ‘me time’ to have you relaxed and feeling your best and a facial will give you that with the added benefit of radiant skin!
